SUMMARY:SCIRT Feedstock Preparation: a Webinar with VALVAN & ESTIA
DESCRIPTION:While the AGEC law could require marketers to integrate an ever-increasing proportion of recycled materials into their new products\, the current ecosystem can only handle less than 1% of post-consumer collection in a closed loop (McKinsey 2022). \nThe material preparation stage is a bottleneck between sorting and material transformation. The current context therefore calls for the development of high-efficiency machines capable of solving the key stages of post-consumer sorting and dismantling. \nThis webinar will focus on dismantling technologies\, drawing on the two approaches discussed in the SCIRT project. Valvan will first present the Trimclean\, an industrial machine based on mechanical textile cutting and on-the-fly sorting optimized by computer vision. CETIA/ESTIA will then take the floor to present their work on laser cutting technology\, motivated by the desire to preserve textile integrity. \nThe presentation will cover:\n– the Fibersort and Trimclean machines and their function\n– choice of cutting technology\n– design and material selection of the cell\n– cutting application developed by CETIA\n– SCIRT deposit presentation and preparation\n– laser cutting tests and statistics \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Behind the Scenes of Thermomechanical Recycling\, a SCIRT Webinar with CETI
DESCRIPTION:In the quest to address the environmental impact of textile waste and promote sustainability in the fashion industry\, thermomechanical recycling emerges as a beacon of innovation. Thermomechanical recycling process combines the effects of heat and mechanical action\, and presents a novel way to repurpose textile waste\, transforming it into valuable new materials. The significance of this approach lies in its ability to significantly reduce the environmental impact associated with textile production and disposal. \nMoreover\, this process minimizes the reliance on virgin resources\, curtailing the carbon footprint and water usage associated with textile production. It embodies a closed-loop approach\, aligning with the principles of the circular economy and paving the way towards a more sustainable and responsible textile industry. This not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also opens up new markets and job opportunities in the green economy. \nThe path to implementing thermomechanical recycling on a global scale\, however\, is fraught with challenges\, including technological limitations\, the need for improved waste collection and sorting systems\, and the requirement for significant investment in infrastructure and research. Despite these hurdles\, the potential rewards of thermomechanical textile recycling make it a vital area of focus for researchers\, industry stakeholders\, and policymakers alike. \nJoin us to uncover the transformative potential of thermomechanical textile recycling—a key to unlocking a sustainable future in textile manufacturing. \nRegister here. \n \n  \nThis is an official World Circular Economy Forum Side Event.

SUMMARY:The Challenges and Opportunities of Elastane Separation: A SCIRT Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Elastane (EL)\, is a highly flexible synthetic fibre also known as Spandex or Lycra. Even though the EL production volume only accounts for about 1% of the total fibre market\, the fibre is\, in low concentrations\, present in a large portion of our clothes. Even in very low concentrations of this fibre\, recycling of textiles with EL is made considerably more difficult or even impossible. Today\, the proportion of apparel containing elastane remains unknown. Furthermore\, a rapid and reliable determination of the EL content in textiles (apart from a cumbersome ISO method) has only recently been presented and the separation of EL from garments is still in its infancy. \nThis webinar will introduce EL\, the textile recycling contaminant\, the challenges it poses and the possible opportunities that can arise towards the EU Green Deal goals. Current technologies will be presented and potential methods for a pre-stage to a recycling process will be evaluated. In this 1-hour webinar\, the following will be addressed: \n– The SCIRT Framework\n– EL in textiles\, why is it even used\, and is it possible to replace it?\n– Why is it such a big problem and why is it so complicated? (Melt extrusion\, tearing lines)\n– Recycling: accurate identification\, EQT vs ISO\n– Recycling methods ESP\n– Challenges in recycling methods\n– Opportunities: utilization of million tons of textile waste

SUMMARY:SCIRT Webinar on Mechanical Recyling
DESCRIPTION:Today\, textile to textile recycling is estimated to 1% for the textile industry. This industry is considered as the second most polluting industry. \nThe European commission has the objective to reduce the negative impact of our consumption in the European market\, with the aim to increase the positive societal and economic impacts of the new products. \nSCIRT project\, funded by the European Commission\, aims to reduce the damaging impacts of the industry. The project’s high technical goal is to create new collections with at least 50% of recycled material through mechanical recycling. \nFor transforming the used textiles into the recycled threads\, more than 180 trials on spinning steps have been realized at the CETI facility. In this hour-long webinar\, you will gain insight into the global scientific procedure and results of making fibre threads from recycled material\, which have been useful for determining the best methods for industrial upscale. \nThis session will also address the SCIRT objective of developing the innovation for market uptake transfering the recycling process at industrial scale and implementing these new materials in new collection developed by several famous brands of the European Market: DECATHLON\, PETIT BATEAU\, BEL&BO\, HNST\, XANDRES. ALTEX and ESG will share their collaborative work in enabling CETI to transfer larger quantities of material. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Data & digital solutions for scaling circularity in the fashion industry
DESCRIPTION:Upcoming EU regulations targeting the fashion industry require fundamental change across the entire value chain\, building meaningful solutions through close collaboration and effective circular ecosystems. \nEU-funded projects\, T-REX Project | Textile Recycling Excellence and the SCIRT Project are organizing the 2nd open-source webinar of a series to help navigate the transformations taking place in the European textile landscape and highlight how relationships between different players can be nurtured and strengthened to move towards an effective circular supply chain. The webinars are streamed live on LinkedIn and available to join and revisit for free. \nThis session will take the form of a panel discussion exploring key digital solutions for enabling circular textiles along with a deep dive on the Digital Product Passport\, which supports both transparency and traceability of textile products\, which will be required by multiple incoming EU regulations. Throughout the hour\, we will cover the following: \n– Which digital solutions can support the transition towards a circular textile industry\n– What is a DPP and how are they used\n– How brands are using digital twins and how they are useful\n– How digital solutions can play a role for sorters and recyclers \nModerated by Kirsi Niinimaki\, Associate Professor in Design\, Research team leader of Fashion/Textile Futures Aalto University. \nSpeakers from both projects\, representing different stages of the textile supply chain\, will share their insights:\n– Mario Osterwalder (SCIRT) is co-Founder of circular.fashion and is an expert in the circular economy\, textile sorting and Digital Product Passports.\n– Jyotsna Gopinath (T-REX Project) is an Innovation Analyst at Fashion for Good within the End of Use team\, overseeing footwear recycling and chemical recycling of textiles\n– Damien Saumureau (SCIRT) is the circularity projects leader working on activewear for water related sports at Decathlon\n– Hervé d’Halluin (SCIRT) is the leader RFID United & Referent Interactive Sport Products at Decathlon
